A
trip
to
the
local
DIY
center
on
any
given
Sunday
in
America
is
an
excellent
way
to
experience
first-hand
the
significant
role
women
now
play
in
home
renovation
projects.
There,
you’ll
see
average
Joe’s
and
Jane’s
alike
trying
to
master
sheetrock
installation
and
precision
cutting
using
a
miter
saw.
Whereas
twenty
years
ago
that
type
of
know-how
would
have
been
considered
best
left
to
the
boys,
today
home
improvement
is
much
more
of a
gender-neutral
pursuit.
Things
change
The
number
of
single
female
homebuyers
in
recent
years
has
mushroomed.
Not
waiting
to
meet
their
partner
to
get
their
home
ownership
lives
underway,
a
growing
number
of
women
are
investing
their
money
in
real
estate,
and
where
possible,
trying
to
save
money
and
augment
property
values
by
tackling
home
renovations
themselves.
For
some,
that
means
painting
and
planting
new
flowerbeds.
However,
increasingly,
it
also
means
installing
new
toilets,
putting
in
pot
lights,
or
overseeing
major
kitchen
renovations.
People
living
in
their
homes
longer
Couples
are
also
driving
the
growth
of
the
do-it-yourself
movement,
but
not
in
the
way
you
think.
According
to
the
2005
Home
Improvement
Research
Institute
Survey,
women
take
the
lead
when
it’s
time
to
initiate
a
kitchen
and/or
bath
remodeling
project,
initiating
45
percent
of
kitchen
remodeling
and
43
percent
of
bathroom
projects,
compared
to
just
34
percent
and
36
percent
for
men.
With
current
market
conditions,
people
are
looking
for
ways
to
get
more
enjoyment
out
of
their
homes,
adding
greater
customization
and
expecting
a
greater
range
of
home
improvement
options
when
they
visit
their
local
do-it-yourself
center.
However,
as
any
do-it-yourselfer
will
tell
you,
no
matter
what
the
size,
someone
needs
to
steer
the
ship
of a
home
improvement
project.
And
clearly,
women
are
becoming
increasingly
comfortable
in
that
role.
Anyone
looking
to
learn
more
about
DIY
projects
should
visit
local
hardware
or
building
supply
stores
for
available
seminar
times
and
topics.
